FIRST SIP: Fercullen 18

Fercullen is the whiskey brand of the Powerscourt Distillery, located on the grounds of the stunning Powerscourt Estate about half an hour south of central Dublin in County Wicklow. Due to potential trademark issues with Powers Whiskey, the powers-that-be at Powerscourt Distillery decided to utilize the name Fercullen instead, which comes from the Irish Gaelic "Fera Cuallan" and refers to the ancient area where the Powerscourt Estate is located. The distillery boasts a classic design befitting its splendid location, and until recently was headlined by Founding Master Distiller Noel Sweeney, an absolute legend in the whiskey industry. 

When former Powerscourt Founding Master Distiller Noel Sweeney left his position as Master Distiller at Cooley Distillery, he was able to secure some casks for use in his next endeavor. Those well-aged ex-bourbon barrels have been bottled into Fercullen 18 (among other offerings). We pick up delicious notes of malt, vanilla and caramel, as well as berries and oaken nuttiness. There's also a bit of spicy fruit in the finish.
