Glendalough means "Valley of Two Lakes" in Irish Gaelic. The distillery is located near a 6th century monastery founded by St. Kevin, whose likeness is featured on the bottles. In addition to the Double Barrel, Glendalough also produces a single pot still whiskey, a 7-year old single malt, and a 14-year old single malt finished in Mizunara oak barrels. A 17-year old single malt Mizunara is an annual St. Patrick's Day special release.
Finishing in oloroso sherry casks after aging in bourbon barrels for three years gives Glendalough Double Barrel a rich sweet nuttiness that is quite pleasing on the palate. The vanilla flavor notes from the bourbon barrels are also readily apparent.
Glendalough Double Barrel retails for about $40 and makes for a fine daily drinker.
