Limavady takes its name from the region and town of the same name located in the Roe Valley just east of Derry. Limavady literally translates to "leap of the dog".
Limavady was initially released in the summer of 2021.
Limavady is a unique Irish whiskey we plan to buy again. (Photo courtesy of Limavady.)
Limavady is a collaborative effort between Vermont-based Whistlepig, famous for its rye whiskeys, and former Dublin Liberties & Bushmills master distiller Darryl McNally. The original Limavady Distillery opened in 1750 (sadly closing just before Prohibition) and McNally is actually a descendant of those original distillers. Interestingly for an Irish whiskey, it launched in the U.S. before being available in Ireland or the UK.
We really like the new Limavady. This single barrel single malt manages to simultaneously be both smooth and spicy, with a bit of fruity aroma initially on the nose. We detect tasting notes of apple and caramel along with what we'd describe as spicy vanilla. Limavady is finished in ex-bourbon and PX sherry casks, which gives it richness and a longer finish on the palate. The bottle is also unique, featuring a bulbous bulge at the top of the neck along with a glass closure.
