FIRST SIP: Redbreast 12 Cask Strength

The Old and New Midleton Distilleries should be on every Irish whiskey lover's bucket list.

Redbreast 12 Cask Strength makes a strong addition to your home bar (pun intended).

Redbreast is a key component of Irish Distillers' growth in the premium category.

 Hailing from Midleton, Redbreast is among the most venerable of Irish whiskey brands. Redbreast 12 is a staple of any bar, while Redbreast 15 is fantastic (our review is here) and the Lustau finish might be our favorite of all of them. Redbreast 12 Cask Strength takes it up several notches thanks to the robust 56% ABV. It of course still has the rich single pot still character of the others, but packs a good deal more punch.

Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is a fine whiskey either neat or with a rock, but please for the love of all that is good and holy don't mix it in a cocktail. Suffice it to say that if you like Redbreast 12 you'll love the 12 Cask Strength version, with the same spicy fruit notes, elements of vanilla, and rich texture from the sherry cask finishing. Redbreast 12 CS has all of that with an even greater nose and finish. We find that adding a drop of water opens it up nicely.

Harder to find than it used to be, so buy a bottle if you see it. But only if you appreciate great single pot still whiskey.
